2005 has been a very successful year for us Our membership has increased to 27. Four artists have given demonstrations - painting daffodils in water colours, tracing (by using a window!) and painting in water colours of a village scene, the use of acrylics, in which some very bold paintings were produced, and lastly, collage with pastels, shells, sand and glittering coloured threads. In March we had lunch at Trelawney Garden Center . We shall be exhibiting during Carnival Week in St. John's Church and entering in the Horticultural Show. We have several more visits from artists planned to which we eagerly look forward.
Come and see our exhibits, you will be amazed at the hidden talent in your village (and mine now). Special thanks to Kath for making our tea each week.

The Delabole Art Group is to hold an exhibition and demonstration
of work at the Delabole Carnival Marquee Some items of work will be for
sale. The art group has quite a few members now but would be pleased to
meet any prospective new members or visitors. We meet each Monday afternoon
at 1-30 pm in the meeting rooms at the Methodist Chapel
In addition we would be interested to know whether there is a need for
a weekend or evening meeting for artists within Delabole. Perhaps you
could let us know if you have a view on this.

Delabole Art Group has been running for around two years now. The group
was founded by
Jean Palin and has always catered for a wide variation in abilities. In
addition, the type of work and materials used varies enormously. There
is water colour, oil painting, pastels, pencil,
pen and ink and one member making peg dolls. The group is non - competitive
and places some importance to the social side.
We meet at the function rooms at the Methodist Chapel situated at the
junction of Rockhead
and Medrose. Each Monday afternoon between 1-30 pm and 4-30pm you will
find us there.
New members or visitors are welcome and it is important for new members
to realise that
they may attend any time within the opening times and as often as they
like.
The group has had a number of exhibitions at local venues and members
are pleased to announce that sales have been made. The group looks forwards
to a successful 2004.
If you have any further questions you can give Jean a call on 01840 212699.

DELABOLE VILLAGE QUILTERS
Latest
We have now started our charity quilt, so we are all keeping busy. If you would care to join us,
we meet in the Methodist Chapel Schoolroom on the second and fourth Friday of each month.
Previously
It's been a while since I last wrote to the Slate magazine, but we have
been very busy, especially visiting quilt shows around and about Cornwall
and exhibiting our own work. We have also moved our meeting place to the
Delabole Methodist Church School Rooms and we now meet on the 2nd and
4" Friday afternoon of the month, from 2pm - 4pm. At our last meeting,
Mrs Elizabeth Sowden came to show us her beautiful embroideries, the designs,
colours and such fine needlework and also the time and patience taken
to achieve a wonderful display of needlework - thank you Elizabeth.
We also welcomed new members June and Pat to the group. We decided after
having such a lovely Christmas Dinner last year, that we would do the
same this year. The quilt we made towards training a dog for the deaf
has been raffled and a considerable amount of money was raised towards
the total required. New members are always welcome, so if you can thread
a needle (we can sort that out too) come and join us and spend an enjoyable
afternoon.

We hope to have the some play equipment in position in June.
This equipment is for the younger children. We are still working on more play equipment and safety surfacing which is very expensive as reported below.
Please take care when you get to use it.
Previously
Delabole Park Project has been running for over three years now, and although it doesn't look like we've done a lot we have worked many, many hours to get where we are today.
First we had to find out what the people of Delabole wanted; this had to include the most important people, the children. This consultation process was very lengthy. After finding out what people wanted we had to get quotes for the play equipment, getting it installed, post installation inspections etc. We had to seek permission for putting new equipment in and make sure it would be looked after once installed.
Then came the fun part, trying to raise the money. Well we started off quite well with lots of local fund raising which was well supported but as time went on the support weakened. We had two very generous grants, one for £6,000 from South West Children's Care and the second for £10,000 from Sure Start.
This sounds like a lot of money but when you're looking at a £115,000 to buy the play equipment, it isn't.
We have now purchased items to the value of £10,000 using the sure start grant as if we didn't spend it we would loose it, this includes a kiddi-ride seated roundabout, a blossom playhouse, a two cradle seat swing, an octopus spring see-saw and a bench. The price doses not include safety surfacing or installation, the price of this is a further £12,000.Crazy I know!
Fund raising must continue for us to get the new equipment the children so desperately need. Any support you wish to give would be greatly appreciated, this could be your time to help at fund raising events, prizes, donations, or you can come and get involved with the whole process.
We hold meetings at the Poldark Inn; Delabole approximately every three weeks, our next meeting is on Wednesday 20 th July 2005 at 7.30pm.
If you want to find out more about our project but cant make our meetings please contact me on kelly@gardinerkelly.wanadoo.co.uk

The Park Project team would like to thank everyone who donated prizes and gave support at our Easter Bingo. We raised a total of £188.84 profit.
A 'Big Thank you' to all at The Poldark Inn and to Les Cory for calling.
We hope to see everyone at our Christmas Bingo on Friday 25^ November.

The beginning of another year and you're all probably thinking, "what happened to the park project"? Well we're still going strong. It is a very lengthy process with many unforeseen setbacks. All the money raised / donated so far will be used to get match funding hopefully. Thanks to Sure Start and the sum of £10,000, we have now purchased a playhouse, a kidi seated roundabout, a double cradled swing, an octopus spinger and a seat. Unfortunately we are unable to place this equipment in the park at the moment, but at least things are getting underway.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for supporting the park project, but do stress that we could do with lots more help. There are just four people working very hard to get equipment in the park which is not good considering how many children we have in the village - mums, dads and grandparents, take a little time to help your children.
We hold our meetings at The Poldark Inn approximately every three weeks. Everyone is welcome, if you have time to dig in and help that's brill. or if you just want to see what's happening that's fine too. We will try to answer any questions that youmay have.
The committee of Delabole Park Project would like to thank
all those who helped at the recent children's tea party. Especially our
regular band of face painters/nail artists: Brenda Burnard, Anne Mitchell,
Christine Wilkins and Sue Woodward. Also a thank you to Brenda Burnard,
Yvonne Edwards and Kim Piper for supervising tea and to Lynn Morris and
Gary Boardman for helping where necessary. A big thank you to the Carnival
Committee for supplying such good facilities and venue, also for funding
the food and Coz the Clown.
A profit of £272.61 was made which will go towards the Park Fund.
We are at present preparing our funding bids and having discussions with
the planning department - so things are moving on. Any volunteers are
greatly appreciated as we have a very small committee.

We would like to say a big thank you to all that supported
our Christmas Bingo. Thank you for all the prizes that were donated and
for everyone that turned up on the night. A big thank you to all at The
Poldark Inn and to Steve for calling Our profits were £294 74 Thank
You
We would like to thank all local businesses that have replied
to the letter we sent out asking for a letter of support and donations
towards our project.
We have received a number of replies and donations in the region of £500.
The letters of support are very important to uor project as these will
help in our applications to large funding bodies (eg. The Lottery) and
hopefully the money we have already raised can then be match funded.
For any businesses that have not replied yet, it's not to late and for
anyone else who wishes to make a contribution or give a letter supporting
our project, please send them to Miss Kelly Gardiner, 4 Trebarwith Road,
Delabole.
Thankyou
The
park project team would like to thank everyone who donated prizes and
gave support at our first Bingo.
The Easter Bingo raised £360.66 towards play equipment for the park.
A big thank you to Les Cory for calling and Cindy Joe Tracey and Adrian
at the Poldark Inn for all their help and support.
We hope to see everyone at our
Christmas Bingo on Friday 28th of November.
It has
been brought to our attention that people seem to think that all the plans/changes
that are hoped for in the park are for the football clubs only, This is
not so.
We are hoping to renew the play equipment in the park for the young children
and include some equipment for the older children. Meetings for this are
being held approx every 3 weeks, everyone is welcome to give views/ideas,
young or old, you all have a say and will be listened to.-
There is also talk of a larger community building. This building would
be used for some football training, but we also hope that it will be used
for many other community events or private events such as Table top Sales,
Birthday Parties, Coffee Mornings, Plays etc. We also hope that a larger
hall would benefit the playgroups/school and other organisations within
the village. Any changes/ Improvements are for the whole village/public
use and not just for the football dubs.
Any comments, suggestions, help are always welcome.

Annual Show 18th August 2007
A disappointing growing season resulted in a decrease in all exhibits at the annual show.
It amazes though how some can still produce excellent flower and vegetable entries even
though conditions are against them.
The usual high standard of entries in Cookery, Art, Floral Art, Photography and Handicraft categories, made for a very colourful and successful Show. This year saw some particularly outstanding Children’s entries, several of which won prizes in classes also open to adults.

Miracle Theatre present
THE TIME MACHINE
Wednesday 13 December at Bodmin Community College
Thursday 14 December at Wadebridge Town Hall
Tuesday 19 December at Launceston Town Hall
7.30pm

This winter, Miracle Theatre’s show explores the world both past and future with the aid of an extraordinary and somewhat unpredictable machine. North Cornwall Arts have programmed three different venues for The Time Machine, so there are even more opportunities to catch Miracle’s wonderful performance. Shows sell out quickly with tickets for Bodmin Community College and both Wadebridge and Launceston Town Halls already moving fast.
Where would you travel? To the past or to the future? Miracle’s new adventure, inspired by the story by HG Wells, starts in the 1950’s, when the Beat Generation was being ‘cool’ and the ‘white heat of technology’ promised to transform everyone’s lives. Then they are transported back to the place where it all started, and nothing will ever be quite the same again!
You can expect to ponder some of the eternal questions of adult life while children will be enthralled, delighted and intrigued by the jokes, songs, and the unexpected things that invariably happen in a Miracle show. The Time Machine is a comic and colourful treat that will keep you smiling for days afterwards.
The company, founded by Bill Scott in 1979, bring together a pool of artists, actors and makers to develop and create theatre with a unique comic style, a joyful use of language, and an immediate visual appeal. The cast for The Time Machine are Ben Dyson, Jo Bowis and Tom Adams and original music for the play has been especially written by local band Glass Shark, who’s unique sound includes elements of Skiffle, Punk and Electra.
Miracle’s reputation for ‘Seriously funny theatre’ just grows and grows. Catch this fantastic show on 13 December (Bodmin), 14 December (Wadebridge) and 19 December (Launceston) all starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are £8 / £7 concessions and £5 children and it is advised to book now before the rush. Call North Cornwall Arts 01840 214220. For other dates and venues in Cornwall visit www.miracletheatre.co.uk
DISSOLUTION OF NORTH CORNWALL ARTS
David Hewitt, Chair of NCA, issues this statement on behalf of the Board of North Cornwall Arts:
‘It is with great regret that I have to announce the dissolution of North Cornwall Arts on 31January 2007. This decision has not been taken lightly and comes at the end of a long period of review.’
Over the years, NCA has given enjoyment to thousands of people in North Cornwall by providing access to a rich variety of professional theatre, dance and music events as well as a hugely popular film season. In addition, their community arts programme has expanded over many years, engaging local people in a variety of social, educational and creative contexts. NCA has played a key role in setting up projects involving young people at risk, cultural diversity, regeneration initiatives such as Living Legends in Tintagel, creative holiday activities and much more. In 2005-6 NCA raised over £90000 to enable local people to benefit from this type of project. Core funding provided the organisation with an operational base and the staff necessary to deliver a valuable information service, raise funds, plan, co-ordinate and manage the projects and live events.
In 2004, Arts Council England South West contracted a consultant to undertake a review of North Cornwall Arts and Restormel Arts. As a result, they have indicated that they want to see a new organisation set up that provides a community participatory arts service for the whole of East Cornwall, ie the districts of Caradon and North Cornwall and the borough of Restormel.
ACESW withdrew core funding from both organisations from 1 April 2006. Cornwall County Council has followed suit. Although NCDC initially indicated they may have continued to fund NCA, it was recognised that their contribution alone would not make NCA viable. It now appears that their funding will go to the new organisation which will be set up to work strategically across the 3 districts, a vast mainly rural area. It will not deliver a performing arts or film programme in North Cornwall and will totally change the nature of arts provision in the district.
David Hewitt continues:
‘During a long period of uncertainty, the staff and board of NCA have remained positive and active. Whilst rigorously exploring the options open to us, our staff have continued to work with the local community on a great range of creative projects in a professional and enthusiastic manner. However, the loss of core funding has had a significant impact on NCA’s ability to sustain the quality of service we feel the people of North Cornwall deserve and that many have indicated they would have liked us to continue.
Unfortunately in spite of our reasoned protests and those of our supporters, our concerns have fallen on deaf ears and decisions on the future of the arts in this area have been taken out of our hands. We are saddened to think that the wishes of our supporters have not been taken into consideration and have reservations that the new organisation will have the ability to deliver in a meaningful way for the people of North and East Cornwall.’
North Cornwall Arts Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 4 December at 7pm at the North Cornwall District Council Offices, College Road, Camelford.

DELABOLE
Carnival Committee
We have now had our final meeting for 2007, and are well on the way to putting together a great week for 2008!!
We had ten applications for funding from various organisations in the village; unfortunately two were received after the deadline, and it was decided that, to be fair to all, these should not be successful.
The successful organisations, who will receive funding from the proceeds from this year’s Carnival, are:
Delabole Primary School
Delabole Village Quilters
Delabole Cricket Club
Delabole Pre-School Playgroup
Delabole Sports Pavillion
Delabole Community Hall
Delabole Christmas Lights
New Year’s Eve Fireworks
We are fighting against rising costs, this year’s overheads showed an increase of some £1500 over last year’s (some of which related to improvements – better toilets for example!!). These overheads do not include the cost of providing entertainment throughout Carnival Week and Carnival Night, which, this year, amounted to £1635 for the week and £1070 on Carnival Night. We know it’s a pain when we continually shake buckets at you as you leave the marquee, but it does help us to keep it all running – this year you gave us over £800 in loose change – thank you!! The street collection buckets on Carnival Night also did very well – raising £1182.
So, keep next year’s Carnival Week dates in your diary, 12th – 19th July 2008, with the Carnival on 19th July – so plenty of time for ideas for costumes and floats!!
